Toothbrush Rugs:
Books, Tools and Supplies
Bohemian Braid, Swedish Braid & Nalbinding
Rugs
The following items are available in our catalog.
Miss Rosemary's Stick Rug: A Naalbinding
Rugby
Carolyn Carlson
Finally
everyone
who has waited for good Naalbinding instructions doesn't have to wait
any
longer. Carolyn Carlson has done a wonderful job of explaining these
traditional
"toothbrush" rugs in instructions and color photos. She includes
directions
for both left and right-handers, and tips on these wonderful,
traditional
toothbrush rugs! The cover is plain, but the color photos are inside
where
they count. 8-1/2" X 11", 17 pages
7-016 Bohemian Braid Rugs for the Beginner
Of
all of the rugs and baskets, the bohemian braid items are the ones
which
are guaranteed to have people shaking their heads. The body of the
bohemian
rugs and baskets is so rigid that folks cannot believe that there isn't
some artificial 'trick' to the technique. There is no trick - just this
old method that has no equal! The unique Bohemian Braid creates a
basketweave
texture on one side and a braided texture on the other, in rugs and
baskets.
It is so stiff that people will think a rope is used inside for
stiffening,
but the Bohemian Braid is done with just a single strand of fabric. The
Book covers both the traditional Bohemian Braid and the 'modern'
Bohemian
Braid, developed by the author for use with continuous strands.
Instructions
for round, square, oval, pentagon and rectangular rugs and baskets.
HANDY HOOK (for Bohemian Braids)
This
is a size
N, plastic crochet hook, 6-1/2 inches long with a broad handle and
curved
shank. If you’ve looked at the Bohemian Braid, you know that one of the
traditional tools for making it is a button hook, which is hard to come
by these days. This ‘Handy Hook’ has the same feel as a button hook
when
working the Bohemian Braid, and is stout enough to last. Also, we’re
told
the design is easier on the hands and wrists if you do a lot of
crocheting,
and it is also a good size for crocheted and fabric tapestry rugs.
Size Q Handy Hook available
Same as above, except orange color. Use with pre-folded wool strips
or really heavy cotton strip.
S-3: BOHEMIAN BRAID SET
This set includes the book #7-016 "Bohemian Braid Rugs for the
Beginner",
a size N Handy Hook, and a lacing needle. Just add your own cotton
strip.
Separately these are a $9.59 value.
LACING NEEDLES
For all of the rugs made with folded cotton strips (crocheted, bohemian
braids, chain braids, knitted, etc.) there will always be tag ends of
fabric
strip that have to be worked back into the rug at the finish. Lacing
needles
make the work easy. For cotton braided rugs, the needls can be used
with
fabric strip to join the braids for a super-strong construction. Lacing
needles are also the primary tools needed to make Flat Wrap and Amish
Knot
rugs, and can be used as "toothbrush" tools for naalbinding and related
rugs.
6" Plastic lacing needle
We've carried these needles for years and though the needles are
plastic,
they do stand up to use for quite a long time. The eye is large enough
for 1-1/2" fabric strip.
