Patterns for Crocheted 'Rag' Potholder
& Knitted 'Rag' Hotpad
These patterns have been in our regular catalog for many
years. We included
them with the idea that they would be a nice way to get people started
with the idea of making wonderful things like rugs from fabric 'rag'
strip.
Then of course, we would hope that the rug-bug would bite and folks
would
like to learn more about making traditional rugs. Both patterns are

Crocheted Potholder
This pattern first appeared in our catalog in 1985. The
potholder is

bias joint to make a continuous length.

Make a slip knot and chain 13.
Begin at second chain from hook. SC5, skip next chain, SC5, 4SC into

VARIATIONS ON THE CROCHETED POTHOLDER..
Hotpad: Lately we've received several inquiries from folks
wondering
if this pattern will work with our "standard fabric strip" (1-1/2
inches
wide). The answer is yes, it will! With the wider strip the potholder
will
become a heavier "hotpad"--like a miniature rug-- and will be larger
also.
Use a size L or N hook, and allow 1-1/4 yards of 45" fabric (about 35
yards
of strip). Then just follow the pattern above.
Basket: With the 1-1/2 inch fabric strip, this pattern can
also
be used to create a heart shaped rag basket. Follow the above pattern
though
round 4. Then just single crochet around and around the heart (one
stitch
in each space) to make the sides of the basket. Allow about 1-3/4 yards
of 45" fabric (about 50 yards of strip).
Knitted Hot Pad
After we’d put out the crocheted potholder pattern, we sure
heard from
the knitters! The hotpad is about 8” X 8”. Cut 1-1/4 yard of 45” wide
cotton
fabric into strips that are 1-1/2” wide. The hotpad looks neatest when
the
fabric strip is double-folded (like bias tape) or use our "standard
fabric
strip" that is already pre-folded..
Size 15 (10mm) needles.
Knitting is begun at the point of the heart.

complete
the heart. Then lace ends of fabric strip back into the knitting, sew
in
place and clip off any excess.
