Sunday-December 11

ATTENTION: Since Christmas falls on the 4th Sunday of the month, the next shoot has been canceled. May you all have a Merry Christmas and never forget the reason for the season. See you on January 8th.

Thirteen brave cowboys came out in the snow and cold to play. Four stages were shot with Mud Marine again bringing some of his great chili. Hossface was wearing his Santa hat. Not quite cowboy but I guess we will let it slide this time.

November 2005

Sunday-November 27

Looks like winter finally arrived with some cold weather and a little snow on the ground. Still, 12 cowboy didn't let that stop them from having fun. Six stages were shot with a short break for lunch with Mud Marine served some great beef stew.

Sunday-November 13

Rain and snow greeted the 13 cowboys that arrived for the shoot. The first order of business was to elect new club officers. After much discussion and arm twisting, Cocolallan was elected president and territorial governor with Often Cranky continuing as vice president. Doc Bandit was elected as secretary/treasure and Marshal DJ as the safety officer. New elections will be held next summer.

Since we were short of time, only three stages were shoot. Mud Marine brought a kettle full of chili that everyone enjoyed. With the cold weather, it hit the spot.

I would also like to welcome two new shooter, Luke and Bill (see pictures below). Hope to see you again.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend a 'BIG THANK YOU' to Drifter for all the hard work he as put in over the years. The club is what it is today, because of his dedication to the club.

Another perfect fall day greeted the 8 cowboys that showed up to have fun. Six stages were shot and everyone had a great time.

Sunday-October 9

The perfect fall day met 13 cowboys when they showed up for the match. However, there was some confusion when Drifter and Often Cranky did not show up. (They are the ones with the key to the shooting shack.) But a really cowboy is creative and soon we were in possession of the timers and score sheets. (I will leave it to your imagination on how that was done)

Six stages were shoot. Everything was going well until Cap'n Crump designed a stage where everything was shoot from the hip. With his scoring system of bonuses, the scores ranged from 3.78 sec. for Mac (he has done a lot of practicing) to 135.68 for Stretch. At any rate, everyone had a great time.

August 2005

Sunday-August 28

Another beautiful day greeted 23 cowboy as they came out to play.

Our safety meeting started with a very sad note. We received the news that one of our club members, Dan Holstin, aka: "Charlie Bull", had passed away the day before. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife, Rowena Holstin, aka: "Mad Millie Black" and the family in their time of grief. I will post more information as I receive it. If you would like Millie's address, please e-mail me.

Sunday-July 24

With good weather, 30 cowboy started the match with 1 leaving early. A great day was had by all.

Sorry that it took so much time to get the scores posted. The server was down for a while and then I had to get a new password from the POVN ( a small plug for Pend Oreille Valley Networks. They host this web site a no cost to the club. If you are looking for internet access, you should check them out. 1-888-800-POVN)

If Pastor Dave continues to wear that hat, he may need to change his name to the 'Flying Nun' which would fit well with his wife, 'Nun with a Gun'.

I am with 2 future cowboys which I call the 'Baby Bandits'. (Since I do the web site, I decided to show off my grand kids) - Doc Bandit

Lastly, for those of you that suffer from 'gun envy', a pard brought these fine rifles to shoot at the match. The first one is an original Winchester 1873 that has original factory engraving and made in 1917. The other rifle in one of the first Henry clones made before they started production in Italy.

Sunday-July 10

The day started out with rain coming down. However, it did not keep the 'real' cowboys away. A total of 15 cowboys showed up and since I had to catch a plane, I left early and didn't do the last stage so 14 finished all stages.

It may of been the weather or just the stage designs (likely the later since I design stage 3 and 4), but the number of misses and procedurals were high. There were a total of 18 procedurals given with 7 on stage 3. I even got one and I designed the stage. Talk about brain fade!!!! Also there was a total of 234 misses. Maybe we need to move the targets closer!!!

Mad Mill Black had a birthday and a cake to go along with it.

Charlie Bull sent me the following e-mail:

Hey Doc...I e-muled IMR about the info I got from Sportsmans Wharehouse in Spokane. Their reply was "The first batch of Trail Boss has been bottled and there is NO recall..."...Please post this in the news somewhere....... Also Mad Milly Black wishes to Thank everyone for their singing, first time she has had that many men singin to her at once, it brought tears to her eyes... Thanks Dan

Sunday-May 22

Sunday was a cleanup day at the range. We had a good turn out with a few cowboys staying afterwards to do a little shooting. Stretch and a few others were trying the 'Evil Roy' '97 shoot gun loading technique. We will see how it goes at the next shoot. Here are a few photos taken as well as one of Mr. Shorty that I 'enhanced' with Photoshop.

Sunday-May 8

Even though it was Mother's Day, 18 cowboys and cowgirls came out to play. (We did have 2 mothers that came). Two new shooters came, Bear Legs and Mad Marine pictured below.

Saturday- April 30

On April 30, Jack Pine had a long range shoot at his place. El Fago sent in this report and photos:

One of the first items of interest at the Cowboy Rifle Shoot at Lee’s BPCR range was examining two fine single action revolvers.

Shorty purchased a Ruger blued/CC New Vaquero in 45 Colt with 7 1/2 “ barrel at the Black Sheep for $410 – a great buy and a great gun.  That sold me; I am in the market for a stainless one.

When put side by side next to Lee’s 1st generation Colt SAA in 45 Colt and 71/2“ barrel we had two wonderful single action revolvers to look at and handle.

We had a good crowd of 15 shooters plus a few spectators to add to the festivities.  There were 9 events of record plus a few more shots fired for good will!

We started with three offhand events shooting at steel discs at 100, 150, and 200 yards.  At the start we allowed two sighters and three shots for record at each range.  To eliminate some ‘grumbling’ and to ‘instill some fairness’ we went to the best three out of five shots.

We broke for lunch before completing the cross stick part of the competition. The potluck included beans, a bean salad, sausage, sausage and kraut,..

After lunch we set up for Lee’s beer can shot.   Three shots at a beer can 200 yards away.  No sighters or help from spotters.   Carl managed to garner 1st place with one shot on the paper and the winning one in the beer can!

Using cross sticks we shot at a 200 yard disc once again, a 240 yard ‘bucket’, a 240 yard spring loaded chicken, and a 300 yard large rectangle and a 300 yard disc.

That was a lot of black powder burnt and lead sent down range.  This endurance test saw only four shooters, judging by recorded scores, complete the nine stages - Carl, Steve, Ron, & Jim Brewer.

Lee claimed to get a perfect score for all but his part of the shoot.  So I awarded Lee the grand prize of Scott’s 1000 sheet roll of toilet paper!

Out of a possible 24 points Steve McClain and Ron Bame earned 18 points each. A consistent Jim Brewer and ‘lottery shooter’ Carl each earned 13 points.

There were lever actions, trapdoors, Sharps, and rolling blocks used in competition.  The calibers I ‘recall’ included 30-30, 40-65, 45-70, 50-90 all shooting cast bullets.

Steve McClain made three fantastic ‘hits’ out of five shoots shooting at a suspended bowling pin at 300 yards.  No rest, just great shooting.  Steve’s third shot broke the wire so that took care of that run!

Ride hard, shoot straight, and speak the truth,

 Elfego Zmuda

Sunday- April 24

The weather was great so 29 cowboy and cowgirls came out to have fun. Six stages were shoot.

El Fago sent the following e-mail and photos:

My trip to Missoula and the BPCR Silhouette Shoot was a very 'humbling' experience.

I was put in the 3rd relay and at the same shooting station as Mike Venturino who was in the 1st relay.  So I had some time to observe the professionals procedures.  They all seemed to take only 3 puffs on the blow tube and only a few sighters.

I started out shooting the pigs and managed to knock two down  before I ran out of time.  Louise was my spotter and coach.  You have 7 minutes for an unlimited number of sighters plus 5 shots of record and then a couple of minutes of pause for the start of the second 5 targets in 5 minutes.

Of course after my first or second miss I made a windage adjustment but did it in the opposite direction.  My next shot with a correction gave me a knockdown.

When Louise gave me the timer  for the first five,I thought I had 4minutes and 55 seconds left, or something like that, but I really had just slightly more than 2 minutes left.  When the cease-fire sounded I had four more shots to take.

When it came time for the turkeys Mike V gave me a suggested come up from the pigs - it worked.  Now that  I figured out the timer  I managed to shoot at all of them and got four knockdowns.

After another come up suggestion from Mike V I was close to the rams but after 3 shots decided to go for record.  I was high, low, left, or right after I made sight changes after nearly every shot.  So now hits on the rams.  In talking to Bill Moody this evening he mentioned that there were some difficult conditions with mirage and wind. Ignorance is bliss.

By the time the chickens were my turn I was sort of wore out.  So after 13 shots, 3 for sight-in I had about 1.5 minutes of time left. Louise said they were all close shots but we weren't playing horseshoes.

I will be the Rangemaster at the Sandpoint Range Friday from 1000 to 1400 hours.

Next match on April 10, we will be starting our summer hours with the match beginning at 9:00 AM.

With if being Easter Sunday and the heavy rain that was falling, only 5 cowboys showed. After much discussion (read BS), Drifter and Often Cranky went home leaving Cap'n Crump, Phil Yerhans and Doc Bandit to shoot. Six stages were shot and we finished by noon.

Sunday-February 27

Twenty nine cowboys and cowgirls came out to play with 28 of them finishing all 6 stages. A lunch of chili and corn bread was served finished of with Krispy Creams donuts.

After the match, some of us went over to Jack Pine's to try our hand at some long range shooting. Now, if I could just see the 300 yd target I would be happy.

After 18 years of R & D, Stretch has finally come up with the 'ultimate' gun cart!!

Sunday-January 9

Winter has finally come. When I looked out this morning the snow was falling on a already snow covers landscape. Since a little snow never kept a good cowboy down, I decided to attend the shoot. When I arrived, Drifter and Cap'n Crump were plowing snow. After finishing the snow clearing, a stage was set up. Drifter couldn't stay for the shoot which only left 4 shooters. We had a first time shooter Phil Yerhans from Priest River. His wife (Longgun Lori) wants to get started to, however, she just watched today. We shot 6 stages and were done by 1:00PM.

It was a great day of shooting. I just like to know why there are so may whimps out there that would let at little snow keeping them from coming out and having fun.

"The Few, The Brave, The Cold"

I was having severe shooting withdrawals from having missed the December 26 match. Since I was heading over to the Seattle area for New Years weekend, I decided to check the SASS Chronicles to see if I could find a club that was shooing on January 2nd. It turn out that Renten United Cowboy Action Shooters (RUCAS) was having one of their monthly shoots. I was able to attend and had a great time. They are a friendly bunch and if you are in the area, they would be glad to have you stop by and shoot with them. Their web site is: http://www.rucascowboys.com/
