SOMETIMES IT'S SUCH A SMALL WORLD,
IT'S STARTLING
I stayed in an interesting Bed and Breakfast in Stockholm. The
host, Urban Hansson, is a jazz musician. A flutist. In the
'60s and '70s, his group, Gimmicks, were successful especially with the
Bossa Nova style, and had several recordings, one of which (a kind of greatest
hits) has been reissued on CD. I saw it at NK in Stockholm.
To my surprise, it turns out he played with Benny several times in the
60's, before Benny's greater fame. Of course he spoke with respect
and appreciation for Benny's talent. Urban's wife was formerly
a jazz singer, herself. They were extremely friendly and personal
with me... altogether a positive B & B experience in both senses.
Several people have previously written to the ABBAmail list, requesting
information on housing in the Stockholm area. Here is what I can contribute:
-
it is located Sollentuna, a suburb north of Stockholm.
Sollentuna is a 13 minute commute on the Pendletag, a local commuter train
system.
-
Adjacent to the Sollentuna train station is a little
mall which includes a grocery store and McDonalds, Syballa (a little bit
broader menu in fast food), gift shops, etc. This is handy.
This area of Sollentuna is called collectively "Sollentuna Centrum", and
also has a bus stop, hotel, and a 4 screen theater.
-
there is a walking route from the Centrum to the
bed and breakfast, but it would not be easy to find one's way if your first
effort was from station to bed and breakfast. Unless Mr. Hansson
can provide a map (e.g. by email) which is more precise than the one now
at his website, it would be better to have him pick you up the first time,
or use a taxi. But once you have walked the route, you can easily
follow it in both directions.
-
all rooms look out on Evisken Bay, which may be the
westernmost reach of the Baltic Sea. Basically, the sea is at the
bottom of his driveway. There were geese and swans when I was there,
and the strand was still very green.
-
breakfast will be served at the time you request,
so long as this is reasonable.
The price per night for my single room was 375:-. Lodgers are issued
their own keys, and are permitted to come and go at any and all hours.
But they are not equipped to deal with credit cards, so bring Kronor.
