Writer Profile

Experience
Early markings. A fondness for conjuring, sorting, classifying, organizing, manipulating and putting words in a row afflicted me young in life. I still have a few early stories scrawled in fat pencil and edited with red crayon. The affliction remains, but now I scribble with a computer.
Curiouser and curiouser. A far-ranging and rabid curiosity precipitated into sojurns as scientist, soldier, woodsman, ecologist, environmentalist, paramedic, therapist, writer, editor, indexer, carpenter, mechanic, journalist, farmer, businessman, athlete. Currently, I freelance from a fully cyberspaced home on the slopes of the north Idaho Rockies near Sandpoint. The solitude is splendid, the views spectacular.
Obsessive-compulsive. A compulsion for writing and rewriting, ad infinitum, is supported by an obsession for triple-checking references, words, phases, events, persons, places, dates. Any writing project can always benefit from additional tweaking. Perfection resides just beyond the next rewrite.
25 years in the game. This mixed bag of neuroses, skills, mini-careers, and plain good luck has sustained and advanced my talents and growth as a writer. Writing has been more a fortunate mutation than a cultivated career. I’ve written for corporations, ad agencies, the media, and my own pleasure...for over 25 years. Portfolio samples snail-mailed upon request. It's a life and living; the boundaries between the two have never been clearly defined.

Education
School of knocks, hard and soft. My best and most enduring education has evolved from just knocking about from job to job, place to place, experience to experience on a trip long, strange, quirky, and always interesting. Souvenirs from the tour continually serve to strengthen and add depth to my writing.
Geek god. Experience and education fuel the brainwork of good writing, but I also rely on the latest labor-saving computer technology. As a tool to enable my compulsion toward the perfect, the Intel chip and WordPerfect are gods. I’m not a real geek, but I could play one on TV.
Degrees, degrees, dregrees. During the journey, I paused to accumulate a few formal degrees. One, a B.S., in business and marketing. Another, a B.A., in the natural sciences included large doses of biology, chemistry and psychology. And to round it all off, a graduate degree in developmental psychology. Degrees are relatively easy to obtain, useful knowledge is not. I was fortunate to acquire some of each.
Technology
Hardwired. My computer system is fast, reliable and frequently upgraded. The Internet furnishes global access to a myriad of information sources as well as good entertainment. E-mail and FAX are great information exchange tools and fast delivery options for finished writing projects.
Softwared. Word, WordPerfect, Publisher, PageMaker, Thumbs, Ventura, SKY Index, Netscape, Eudora, PhotoShop are fun and functional. I've even become my own publisher with several web pages (and see also) now orbiting in cyberspace.
