Catalog: Part 7-- Rugmaking Fabrics

The neatest look with most traditional rag rugs is acheived by using double-folded fabric strips for a smooth, professional look in the finished rug.  Using pre-folded strip is the difference between an heirloom rug and one that is just raggy. But double-folding fabric strip is a chore. Diana says "once the strip is folded, the rug is half done"--and it is true! Half the time in making a quality rug is in the fabric preparation.

prefolded stripOur pre-folded fabric strip is available again in lots of colors and prints. Each 25-yard skein is approximately equivalent to one yard of 44-inch wide fabric for easy conversion to yardage requirements in rug making directions.  We take first quality, new fabric (cottons and cotton blends) and cut it into 1-1/2-inch wide strips and then fold it to bury the raw edges, making a finished strip that is about 1/2-inch wide.

Since we are just getting geared up again with the fabric processing, we have concentrated on getting the widest color selection, but some of the colors are in limited supply. Please email us to make sure that we have the color and quantity that you want in stock and ready to go. If we have to custom cut to fill your order, it can take up to two weeks to ship instead of the usual two business days. Also, there are some fabrics which were the manufacuturers "end of run" so we cannot obtain additional supplies.

(Just four of these skeins will stretch the length of a footbal field--that is a lot of folding to do if you are short on time. Compare our price with the double-folded bias tape you find in sewing stores which  costs $2.00 for only three yards!)

Below is a partial listing of the colors we currently have on hand.  If you have need of a particular color, email us since we are processing new stocks regularly and the list changes all of the time.

SOLIDS:  black, country blue, country rose, navy blue, burgundy, dark green
PRINTS: ( prints disappear in the rugs leaving just an overall impression of color)
marine blue, moss green print, sage print, blued-teal marbled & windowpane prints, black & tan animal print, golden cream,  deep green with blue/white print, several prints with gray mixed with other muted colors, ivory with pale taupe print
POLISHED COTTONS: These are a heavier fabric (cut from decorator drapery fabric) and shouldn't be mixed with the standard weight strip in the most types of rugs.  Pastels, black with jewel brights and forest mix prints available.
50-yard craft bundle of pre-folded fabric strip.................$9.00
This is the same pre-folded strip as above but comes in short yardages for crafting projects (like the "Nettie Doll" on our website). You'll receive at least five different fabrics in a variety of solids and prints, but they may be of different weights so we don't recommend this selection for rugs where strip weight needs to be consistent.
