#10: Fabric Tapestry Rugs
Fabric tapestry rugs appear to have originated in the latter part of
the 19th century with a strong link to the Arts and Crafts movement of
that time. These rugs are tapestry crochet done with fabric strip.
Their
surface texture is of crochet, with the pattern showing clearly in the
stitches on the front and back sides. Patterns varied from the simple
pinwheels
to quilt style patterns. The designs in fabric tapestry rugs are
created
by the simultaneous use of 2 to 8 strands of fabric (most often
2).
Fabric Tapestry rugs can be made in all of the same shapes as standard
crocheted rugs, and the qualities to determine a good rug are the same
(tight even stitching, regular shaping, smooth surface) plus the
artistic
elements of solid design composition and execution. Old fabric tapestry
rugs are much rarer than standard crocheted rugs.
See the new page with more color photos of
the rugs from the book "Crocheted & Fabric Tapestry Rugs".
