#7: Pjonging & Chain Braid Rugs

All of the chain braids are created with loops laced through loops and are the precursors of other rugmaking methods such as bohemian braid and crochet. Though both sides of a chain braid rug are quite usable, there is a distinct difference between the front and back textures.

There are four basic divisions in the family of chain braided rugs since these braids can be made with either one or two strands, and both types of chain braids can be made as either separate braids or attached to the rug as the braid is made. "Pjonging" was the common name for the single strand, attached chain braid. Each of the types is shown below, with the front (larger picture) and the back (smaller picture) of each rug for comparison.

Above: Single strand, attached chain braid known as Pjonging.

Above: Two strand, attached chain braid. Note how the front side looks very much like a standard braided rug.

Above: Two strand, detached chain braid, the only one of the chain braids where the front and back are not strikingly different
